Libertadores Round of 16: Will Flamengo Accelerate the Pace? Racing Club’s Golden Chance for a Comeback
The Round of 16 in the Copa Libertadores continued on the morning of August 11 (Beijing time), with reigning champions Flamengo taking a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg into their return match against Olimpia. Meanwhile, Racing Club of Argentina looked to overturn a first-leg deficit against Atlético Nacional in what promised to be a thrilling conclusion to the two-legged ties.

Flamengo vs. Olimpia: Will the Tempo Increase in the Second Leg?
Flamengo’s opening performance in the first leg at home was a study in patience and precision. The defending champions dominated possession and moved the ball effectively into Olimpia’s penalty area, yet avoided unnecessary risks in attack. Their strategy seemed to be one of attrition, wearing down their opponents rather than forcing the issue. Despite the high stakes, Flamengo’s players often appeared relaxed, with minimal pressing in the opposition’s half. On the sidelines, however, head coach Jorge Sampaoli was a ball of energy, pacing the technical area with visible tension as if his team was on the brink of elimination.

The first half was a balanced affair, with Olimpia coming closest to scoring. A corner kick late in the half created a golden opportunity, as the Paraguayan side managed a headed flick-on that led to an unmarked chance just outside Flamengo’s goal. However, their effort cannoned off the crossbar, leaving both teams goalless at the break.

Flamengo found the breakthrough early in the second half. A precise left-footed cross from Gabriel Barbosa (Gabigol) found Pedro Henrique, who rose unchallenged to head the ball into the net. Olimpia’s defenders, visibly fatigued from Flamengo’s relentless possession, were slow to react, allowing Henrique to capitalize.
After taking the lead, Flamengo seemed content to protect their advantage rather than pursue a second goal. Olimpia, on the other hand, showed little urgency, seemingly comfortable with a narrow defeat. This lack of intensity on both sides resulted in a subdued conclusion to the first leg.
For the second leg, Olimpia will need to shift gears and adopt a more aggressive approach. Flamengo, on the other hand, might look to exploit spaces left behind by a desperate Olimpia team. However, Flamengo’s recent form raises questions about their ability to execute this counter-attacking strategy. Their 0-3 defeat in domestic competition suggests vulnerabilities that Olimpia could potentially exploit. A 1-1 draw in the return leg seems a plausible outcome, given both teams’ recent performances.
Racing Club vs. Atlético Nacional: The Perfect Storm for a Comeback
Racing Club entered their tie against Atlético Nacional with a reputation for underwhelming performances in international competitions. Their first-leg encounter in Colombia seemed to follow a similar script. Racing dominated possession but failed to convert their chances, while Atlético Nacional ruthlessly punished Racing’s defensive lapses. By the 83rd minute, Racing found themselves trailing 3-0.
Remarkably, Atlético Nacional handed Racing a lifeline in the final minutes, conceding two penalties that allowed Racing to claw back to 3-2. However, their reprieve was short-lived. Just one minute after reducing the deficit to a single goal, Racing conceded again, and the match ended 4-2 in favor of the Colombians.
The absence of an away-goals rule means Racing’s two strikes in Colombia offer little tangible advantage heading into the return leg. However, they may serve as a psychological boost for the Argentine side, who will now need to throw everything at their opponents to progress.
Racing’s domestic league campaign concluded on July 29, leaving the team in an ideal position to focus entirely on the Libertadores. They should be well-rested and still in peak competitive form, a combination that could prove decisive in their bid for a comeback. In contrast, Atlético Nacional remains active in the Colombian league and managed a 1-1 draw with Deportivo Cali in their most recent match. While their unbeaten run continues, the physical demands of competing on two fronts could leave them vulnerable.
Racing will undoubtedly benefit from playing at home, where their passionate fanbase can provide an additional boost. With nothing to lose, they are likely to attack from the first whistle, hoping to overwhelm Atlético Nacional with relentless pressure. A 3-0 victory is within reach for Racing if they can capitalize on their opportunities and avoid defensive mistakes.
The second legs of these ties highlight the unique drama of South America’s premier club competition. Flamengo and Racing Club face vastly different challenges, yet both embody the unpredictability and intensity that define the Copa Libertadores.
