Inter’s Trio Shine in Champions League Rankings: Sommer, Dumfries, and Bisseck Among the Best
After Inter Milan's narrow defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, Italian commentator Altobelli delved into the Champions League's statistical leaderboards and highlighted the impressive performances of three Inter players who rank among the top two in key metrics. Their contributions, though primarily defensive, underscore the defensive identity that defines this Nerazzurri squad.

Yann Sommer: A Wall Between the Posts
Swiss veteran Yann Sommer has emerged as one of the top-performing goalkeepers in this season's Champions League. Among goalkeepers who have played more than 300 minutes, Sommer boasts the highest save percentage at a remarkable 95%. In the match against Bayer Leverkusen, Sommer made four saves, adding to his season total of 19 from 20 shots on target faced. While this ranks him 12th in total saves, his efficiency and reliability have set him apart, as evidenced by his top spot in save percentage.

Sommer’s form in the Champions League contrasts somewhat with his performances earlier this season in Serie A, where occasional inconsistency was evident. However, recent matches have shown an upward trend in his domestic displays as well. His Serie A clean-sheet percentage now stands at 42.9%, ranking him among the top five goalkeepers in Italy, trailing only the likes of Di Gregorio, Perin, De Gea, and Meret.

Despite Leverkusen’s late winner, Sommer’s frustration was palpable post-match—a reflection of his high standards and competitive spirit. His resurgence in both domestic and European competitions highlights his enduring value to Inter’s backline.
Denzel Dumfries: Tenacity and Tactical Discipline
Dutch wingback Denzel Dumfries has also left his mark on the Champions League leaderboards. With 13 fouls committed, he ranks second in this category, but what stands out is his ability to manage these fouls effectively. Dumfries has received only one yellow card so far, a significant improvement over last season, when he averaged one booking every six fouls.
Dumfries’ physicality and tactical intelligence were sorely missed in the Leverkusen match, which he had to sit out due to illness. Analysts like Zvonimir Boban and renowned journalist Guarro suggested that his absence significantly impacted Inter’s ability to transition effectively from defense to attack. This was particularly evident in counterattacking situations where Dumfries’ speed and presence on the right flank could have made a difference.
In contrast, Dumfries had been pivotal in Inter's earlier Champions League clash against Arsenal, where the Nerazzurri secured a narrow win despite failing to register a shot on target from open play. Dumfries' defensive contributions in that match were immense: three tackles, five clearances, and 17 successful duels against Arsenal’s left-sided players. His ability to disrupt opposition play and drive forward on the counter makes him a critical asset for Simone Inzaghi’s system.
Yann Bisseck: A Rising Star in the Backline
Young German center-back Yann Bisseck is rapidly earning recognition for his aerial dominance and defensive reliability. Among players with more than 12 aerial duels in the Champions League, Bisseck ranks second in aerial duel success rate at 72.2%, just narrowly behind Bayern Munich’s Kim Min-jae.
Bisseck’s towering performance against Leverkusen drew praise from both Italian and German media. La Gazzetta dello Sport awarded him a 6.5 rating, one of the highest for Inter players, while Kicker gave him the joint-best score for his side. His contributions included a key block, five clearances inside the penalty area, and a commanding 75% aerial duel success rate against Leverkusen's physically imposing attackers.
Bisseck’s rise has not gone unnoticed in Germany. Former national team coach Jürgen Klinsmann recently expressed disbelief that such a talented defender has yet to receive a call-up to the German national team. However, with new coach Julian Nagelsmann reportedly reaching out to Bisseck, his international debut seems imminent.
A Defensive Identity
While Sommer, Dumfries, and Bisseck shine in defensive metrics, Inter’s attacking players have struggled to make similar impacts on the offensive leaderboards. Metrics such as dribbles, key passes, and shot conversion rates remain dominated by players from Europe’s elite attacking teams. This disparity reflects the limitations of Inter’s current squad, particularly in the final third, where the technical precision and individual brilliance of their forwards fall short compared to top-tier superstars.
Italian pundits have emphasized that Inter’s path to success in the Champions League must be rooted in their defensive strength. Their attacking unit, while capable, lacks the consistency and decisiveness to compete with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, or Manchester City in an open game. Instead, the Nerazzurri must rely on organization, resilience, and the outstanding contributions of their defensive stalwarts to navigate Europe’s elite competition.
In the wake of the loss to Leverkusen, the performances of Sommer, Dumfries, and Bisseck offer a silver lining for Inter fans. These three players exemplify the qualities that make the Nerazzurri formidable, even against the strongest opposition. As the season progresses, their continued excellence will be crucial in keeping Inter competitive on all fronts.
