Inter's Chief Fumbles During Victory Celebration: Ambiguous Words Ignite Summer Transfer Window Expectations
As Inter Milan basked in the glory of their championship victory, the night was filled with praise and adulation. Yet, it also had its share of amusing moments, such as the "Ausilio out for the season" joke. What happened? In the final minutes of stoppage time, Inter's sporting director Piero Ausilio was on the stands, exuberantly celebrating the team’s victory. Immediately after the match, he rushed onto the pitch to join the players in their celebrations. However, in his overzealous excitement, the 50-something-year-old director injured himself and had to miss out on the more formal celebrations.

"Why was I absent during the celebration?" Ausilio explained, "I got hurt. After the final whistle, I ran and strained my calf. The season is over for me…" Inzaghi, Inter's coach, humorously remarked post-match, "The steps at San Siro can be quite dangerous, but don’t worry, Inter has plenty of experience dealing with such sudden incidents."

Despite Ausilio’s absence from the field celebrations, no one overlooks the immense contributions of this veteran, who has served Inter as a player, staff member, and manager. Thuram’s crucial goals in both legs of the Milan derby, Frattesi's decisive performance in the first leg, and his red card-winning display in the second leg – these player acquisitions bear Ausilio’s hallmark. Marotta has repeatedly emphasized over the past months that without Ausilio, Inter wouldn’t have been able to secure Thuram against numerous competitors or acquire Frattesi for a modest sum.

Italian television chased Ausilio into the locker room, seeking his thoughts on Inter’s future plans. Winning the second star was anticipated and not an unexpected joy. But what about the summer transfer market? Would there be unexpected joys? When asked by Biasin, Ausilio's response was intriguingly ambiguous, "Transfer market? If I told you Inter's recruitment was over, would you believe me?"
Reporters from the capital and Turin believed it, consistently speculating that Inter’s summer transfer door was closed. However, I do not believe it. I am convinced that Inter will have surprising moves this summer, despite financial constraints and widespread doomsday predictions about the club’s stability.
When pressed further by reporters, Ausilio’s remarks hinted at the readiness of Inter’s transfer team to make significant moves. For instance, he said, "We are very eager to know that number, the budget number for the season." Translated, this means that even a slight maneuvering space in the budget could allow for significant actions. Another revealing statement was, "If the transfer budget is zero? We always emphasize fiscal sustainability and security, considering the difficult moments we’ve been through. Discussing this is correct. However, we are now very used to working in such conditions. Today’s success proves that."
This translates to: despite generating a net profit in transfers amounting to nine figures in euros over the past few years, Inter still managed to win titles. In comparison, a zero budget is not a big deal. He further stated, "We have 8-10 people working hard, looking for market opportunities, which is how we signed Thuram. We have won the championship now, but we must not forget those working behind the scenes. They have done so in the past, do so now, and will continue to do so in the future."
This implies that Thuram’s signing is just the beginning, and more significant moves are on the way. On the night of their championship victory, many journalists—like some from Corriere dello Sport—and fans—like those on Tieba, who do nothing but spread anxiety and believe the world ends if the owner doesn't spend money—pointed out that there are huge questions about whether Inter can maintain their lead in Serie A a year from now, given the current financial situation suggests limited transfer budget.
However, Ausilio’s words have given many Inter fans hope for the upcoming summer transfer window and the club’s future journey. Is a zero budget a real obstacle? Look at today’s derby. Pavard provided an assist, Thuram secured the victory, and one of the fundamental reasons for Inter’s win was the higher quality of their new signings compared to their rivals.
In the past summer window, Inter underwent a massive overhaul with 12 players out and 12 in, bringing in players even stronger than their predecessors. How much did it cost? The net transfer investment was negative 58.2 million euros! Compared to AC Milan, who spent a net 50.5 million, Inter’s market investment was 108 million less!
These numbers prove that the right team-building philosophy and healthy operational mode can sometimes be more crucial than mere spending figures. Therefore, for the upcoming summer window, we have every reason to have increased expectations. I know many Inter fans are naturally anxious and highly conscious of potential crises, but the current Inter gives us more courage to expect greater things.
Ausilio's ability to navigate the transfer market despite budgetary constraints has instilled a sense of optimism among the Inter faithful. His statements, filled with confidence and subtle hints, suggest that the club is ready to pounce on any opportunity that arises. This optimism is not unfounded; it’s based on a track record of savvy deals and strategic acquisitions.
The celebration of Inter’s latest triumph, despite the comical mishap with Ausilio, underscored the resilience and strategic acumen that have come to define the club in recent years. As the summer transfer window approaches, the Nerazzurri community looks forward with a mix of anticipation and confidence, buoyed by the belief that their club, regardless of financial constraints, is poised to make impactful moves.
Inter’s ability to win titles while maintaining financial prudence offers a blueprint for success in modern football. As fans eagerly await the next chapter, the underlying message from Ausilio and the Inter management is clear: expect the unexpected, and never underestimate the strategic prowess of the Nerazzurri.
