Former Inter Milan Prodigy Now Faces Uncertain Future, Potentially Joining Ex-AC Milan Star
During the recent international break, a familiar face returned to the spotlight: Thierry Henry. As the newly appointed head coach of France's U21 and Olympic teams, Henry has led the U21s to two impressive victories: a 4-1 win against Denmark and a 4-0 triumph over Slovakia. Among the notable performances was that of Inter Milan player Lucien Agoumé, who made his debut for the French U21 team and provided an assist, prompting both Italian and French media to headline, "Agoumé Finds His Smile Again."

Agoumé’s journey with the French national teams has been one of highs and lows. Back in 2019, at just 17, Agoumé was the midfield linchpin and captain of the French U17 team. He helped them secure third place at the FIFA U17 World Cup and reach the semifinals of the UEFA U17 Championship, earning spots in the tournaments' Best XI. At that time, Agoumé was considered on par with emerging talents like Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham. His potential attracted interest from over a dozen European clubs, and Inter Milan, still financially stable then, signed him for €4.5 million plus add-ons, betting on his bright future.

However, Agoumé’s trajectory did not continue its upward climb as expected. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the 2021 FIFA U20 World Cup, costing Agoumé a key opportunity to showcase his talent. By the time international competitions resumed in 2023, he was already overage for the U20 level, which only allowed players born after 2003. Despite his promising start, Agoumé struggled to secure a place in higher-level national teams and was not called up to the U21s until Henry took charge.

In his debut for the U21s, Agoumé came on as a substitute, replacing a player four years his junior. Despite the oddity of the situation, he made an immediate impact by intercepting a clearance from Denmark, leading to an assist on his debut. This performance highlighted Agoumé’s interception skills, a strength he showcased during the 2021-22 season, where OPTA noted he had the highest interceptions per 90 minutes among all U21 players in Europe's top five leagues who played over 1,000 minutes.
Despite his evident talents, Agoumé has been labeled by some critics as having too many flaws, an assessment that seems overly harsh given his strengths. Although his assist in the Denmark game did not earn him a starting spot, Henry's continued faith in him suggests he is now part of the coach's plans. Standing out in a French U21 squad filled with players valued at over €30 million is no small feat, and securing a regular spot is a significant challenge.
One such star in the U21 squad is Warren Bondo, a player whose summer transfer saga saw him linked with several top clubs, including Inter Milan. However, financial constraints prevented Inter from signing him. For Agoumé, this renewed confidence under Henry comes with a dilemma. At Inter Milan, he is considered the "eighth midfielder" and is not part of the coach's main plans. As his performances for France improve, both he and Inter grow increasingly anxious about his future this season.
Throughout the summer, Inter and Agoumé sought a suitable new team for him, but no club offered a permanent transfer. According to transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, 2-3 lower-tier Serie A and Ligue 1 clubs expressed interest in loaning him, but Agoumé, having experienced three consecutive seasons on loan at Spezia, Brest, and Troyes, prefers either staying or securing a transfer, avoiding another loan stint. Each loan move disrupted his adaptation to new tactics, causing frustration and hindering his development.
Now, Agoumé faces a difficult choice. Staying at Inter likely means limited playing time unless multiple key players are injured, which is detrimental to a young player’s growth. Prolonged bench-warming is a worst-case scenario for both him and the club. Another option, as reported by Di Marzio, is a potential move to the Turkish Super Lig, with Istanbul Başakşehir or Adana Demirspor showing interest in loaning him. Despite his reservations about the Turkish league, the extended transfer window in Turkey (until September 15) offers a temporary solution better than waiting for the winter transfer window.
If Agoumé joins one of these Turkish teams, he could find himself alongside former AC Milan stars M'Baye Niang (known as "Nyang" in Turkey) and Krzysztof Piatek. Niang, now at Adana Demirspor, was once hailed as a potential savior of AC Milan, while Piatek, now with Istanbul Başakşehir, cost AC Milan €35 million in 2019 but has since faded from the limelight. Agoumé, once a highly-touted prospect himself, now faces a similarly uncertain future, underscoring the unpredictable nature of football careers.
Inter Milan remains committed to helping Agoumé overcome these challenges. At 21, he still has time to recover and fulfill his potential, despite the setbacks. The club and player are keen on finding a resolution that allows him to play regularly and continue developing, whether through a strategic loan move or a permanent transfer to a club where he can play a more central role. As the situation unfolds, Inter and Agoumé must navigate these complexities to ensure his career is back on track, embodying the resilience and determination needed to succeed in professional football.
