Three Years Later: 35-Year-Old Beijing Guoan Legend Poised for CSL Return, Refuses to Retire
At 35 years old, former Beijing Guoan midfielder Jonathan Viera remains a free agent, yet his passion for football burns as brightly as ever. Far from contemplating retirement, Viera is actively seeking a return to professional football. According to Canarias7, the Spanish playmaker has received multiple offers from clubs eager to secure his services. Among these, the prospect of rejoining Beijing Guoan stands out as his preferred choice, driven by his fond memories of the club and the opportunity to reunite with his former coach, Quique Setién.

A Stellar Career in Beijing
Viera first joined Beijing Guoan in February 2018 from Las Palmas for a transfer fee of €11 million. Over three seasons, he cemented his status as one of the most influential foreign players in the Chinese Super League (CSL). Viera’s record of 88 appearances, 30 goals, and 30 assists speaks volumes about his impact on the pitch. His creativity, vision, and technical skill were instrumental in Guoan’s midfield, making him a fan favorite and a key figure in the team’s success during his tenure.

In the summer of 2021, Viera departed Guoan to return to his boyhood club, Las Palmas. Over the subsequent three years, he played for Las Palmas, Almería, and UAE Pro League side Khor Fakkan. Despite his consistent performances, Viera found himself without a club in September 2023 after parting ways with Khor Fakkan.

“I Miss Football Every Day”
For the past three months, Viera has been “unemployed,” but his desire to play football has only grown stronger. In an interview with Canarias7, he candidly shared his feelings: “Every day I wake up, I miss football.” His love for the game remains undiminished, and he is determined to continue his career.
During the Christmas period, Viera’s phone has been ringing non-stop with offers from clubs interested in signing him. However, it is the potential of returning to Beijing Guoan that resonates most deeply with the Spanish midfielder. Viera’s familiarity with the CSL and his positive experiences in China make this an attractive option for him.
A Reunion with Quique Setién
One of the most compelling aspects of a potential return to Guoan is the opportunity to work again with Quique Setién, the team’s current head coach. Viera and Setién share a rich history, having worked together at Las Palmas during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. Under Setién’s guidance, Viera thrived as the creative engine of the team, contributing 16 goals and 16 assists in 59 La Liga appearances. His exceptional performances during this period earned him a call-up to the Spanish national team.
The strong rapport between Viera and Setién could be a decisive factor in reigniting the midfielder’s career. Setién’s tactical philosophy, which emphasizes possession and creativity, aligns perfectly with Viera’s strengths, making the reunion a promising prospect for both player and coach.
Beijing Guoan’s Strategic Move
For Beijing Guoan, signing Viera as a free agent represents a low-risk, high-reward opportunity. The club would not need to pay a transfer fee, making the deal financially advantageous. Despite his age, Viera’s technical abilities and wealth of experience could provide a significant boost to Guoan’s midfield.
Viera’s return would also resonate with the club’s fanbase, who remember him fondly for his contributions during his first stint. His familiarity with the league and his proven track record make him an ideal candidate to strengthen Guoan’s squad as they aim for a successful 2024 season.
A Love for China
Viera’s affection for China extends beyond football. In his interview with Canarias7, he described the country as “a place I love.” His positive experiences during his time in Beijing have left a lasting impression, and he is eager to return to a place where he felt valued and appreciated.
Eyes on the January Transfer Window
As the January transfer window approaches, all eyes are on whether Viera will make his much-anticipated return to the CSL. His potential signing would not only mark the continuation of an illustrious career but also serve as a testament to his enduring love for the game.
For Beijing Guoan, bringing back a player of Viera’s caliber and experience could be the catalyst for a successful campaign. For Viera, it’s an opportunity to rekindle his passion and once again showcase his talent on a stage he knows and loves. Fans of Beijing Guoan are undoubtedly waiting with bated breath to see their former star don the green jersey once more.
