Premier League Matchday 3: Brighton's New Tactics Enhance Mitoma’s Efficiency, Norway's Absence Benefits Manchester City
The third round of the Premier League continued on the evening of August 31, and fans were treated to some intriguing developments. Brighton & Hove Albion made a tactical shift this season, reducing their reliance on the left flank where Kaoru Mitoma, their Japanese star, typically operates. Despite this change, Mitoma’s goal and assist statistics remain impressive, suggesting a more sustainable approach for the long season ahead. Meanwhile, Manchester City seems to be reaping the benefits of having their star striker, Erling Haaland, fully focused on the season, thanks to Norway’s absence from this summer’s European Championship. Even for a powerhouse like City, such unexpected advantages can make a difference.

Arsenal vs. Brighton – Less Is More for Both Sides
Arsenal have started their season in a solid fashion, securing six points from their first two matches without conceding a goal. While the clean sheets might suggest defensive solidity, the reality is a bit more nuanced. In their recent away game against Aston Villa, William Saliba was dispossessed near his own penalty area, leading to a clear chance for Villa’s striker, Ollie Watkins, who somehow missed a near-open goal. Arsenal was fortunate not to concede in that moment.

In the second half, Villa had another golden opportunity with a close-range header, but Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya, pulled off a crucial save. Last season, Raya was often seen as a weak link in the Arsenal defense, but his performance this season suggests that without him, Arsenal might already have dropped points. Despite being under pressure from Villa for much of the match, Arsenal’s squad depth proved decisive. Substitute Leandro Trossard came off the bench and scored just two minutes later with a composed finish. If only he could show such calmness at the European Championship, Belgium might have advanced further.

Trailing 1-0, Aston Villa grew increasingly desperate, and Arsenal capitalized on this to score another goal and seal the victory. Brighton, on the other hand, has also benefited from a managerial change this season, winning both of their opening matches. Only four teams in the league have managed to accomplish this so far. In their recent home match against Manchester United, Brighton played with immense confidence, launching frequent attacks from the right side, where new signing Adama Minthe, a young Gambian player, displayed exceptional dribbling skills. This left Manchester United’s makeshift left-back, Diogo Dalot, in a difficult position.
However, the real breakthrough came from the left flank where Kaoru Mitoma operates. With Brighton’s attack focusing primarily on the right, Manchester United’s defense naturally shifted their attention away from Mitoma. This resulted in fewer touches for the Japanese winger, but it did not diminish his threat. After scoring in the first match, Mitoma provided a composed assist with a grounded cross in the second match. Despite having a physically strong opponent in Noussair Mazraoui, Mitoma’s agility gave him a significant edge.
Last season, Brighton’s attack revolved mainly around Mitoma's left-side raids. While this approach initially paid off, as the season progressed, Mitoma’s form visibly dipped due to the physical demands and the constraints posed by the AFC Asian Cup. Opponents started employing double-marking strategies to neutralize him, significantly reducing his offensive threat. This season, Brighton's diversified approach has proven beneficial for Mitoma, allowing him to maintain his high performance levels over the course of a long season.
Arsenal completed the league double over Brighton last season and will be hoping for a repeat performance at home. Meanwhile, Brighton’s goal-scoring run may face a temporary pause against a solid Arsenal side.
West Ham United vs. Manchester City – Haaland Quickly Finds His Groove
West Ham United found their rhythm in the second half of their last match, scoring two goals in just five minutes between the 67th and 72nd minutes to secure their first win of the season. Despite this victory, new manager Julen Lopetegui still faces considerable pressure, as his tactical system has yet to take shape, and his new signings are still struggling to gel. This has made West Ham one of the weaker teams in the Premier League in terms of current form.
While fans are pleased with the three points against Crystal Palace, a team considered to be at a similar level, they are still concerned about the earlier defeat to Aston Villa. Lopetegui still needs some more meaningful victories to truly prove himself.
Defending champions Manchester City sit at the top of the table after two matches, thanks to their superior goal difference. Erling Haaland has hit the ground running this season, scoring three goals in the first two games. This swift start is perhaps due to the added advantage of not having participated in the European Championship this summer, allowing him ample time to prepare.
However, rather than basking in their victories, Manchester City should reflect on why they conceded the opening goal in their last match against newly-promoted Ipswich Town. Was there a lack of concentration from the players at the start of the game?
City have defeated West Ham United in both league encounters over the past two seasons. Given West Ham’s current state, it seems likely that City could perform at just 30% of their potential and still secure a comfortable win, while West Ham's efforts might be entirely stifled.
Brighton’s Evolving Tactics: A New Focus Benefits Mitoma
Brighton’s change in strategy has allowed Mitoma to play a more measured game. Instead of relying heavily on his relentless running down the left wing, the team has balanced their attack, using the right side more often. This shift reduces the physical toll on Mitoma and gives him more freedom to create and finish chances when he does receive the ball.
In Brighton’s match against Manchester United, their tactical focus on the right opened up space for Mitoma on the left. He was able to make decisive contributions with fewer touches on the ball, exemplifying his efficiency. His clever assist for the goal, coming after his opening day strike, is a testament to his growing maturity and ability to adapt to new roles.
For Brighton, this tactical evolution under their new manager has shown promise. The early success has provided optimism for a strong season, although they face a tough challenge against an Arsenal side that has already shown resilience and depth.
The Hidden Benefit for Manchester City: Norway’s Absence
Norway’s failure to qualify for the European Championship turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Manchester City. Erling Haaland, their star striker, had an uninterrupted preseason to focus on his fitness and form. Unlike many of his counterparts who returned from the tournament fatigued or injured, Haaland started the Premier League campaign fresh and in top shape.
In the opening two matches, Haaland has already found the net three times, demonstrating his sharpness and readiness. For a club like Manchester City, even a slight edge in player fitness can be pivotal in their pursuit of another Premier League title.
Looking ahead, City will hope to maintain their momentum as they travel to face West Ham. Given the form and situation of both teams, City are heavily favored to continue their winning ways.
As the Premier League season unfolds, these tactical shifts and hidden advantages could play a crucial role in shaping the narratives for both Brighton and Manchester City. While Brighton’s new style makes Mitoma a more efficient player, City benefits from having Haaland in peak condition. Only time will tell how these factors will impact the title race and the battle for European spots this season.
