MLS Eastern Conference: Columbus Crew's Bigger Ambitions This Season, How Will NYCFC Maintain Their Form?
As the MLS Eastern Conference matches continue on the morning of July 4th, Columbus Crew, last season's playoff champions, have made it to the final of the CONCACAF Champions League this season. This achievement has significantly boosted their confidence, leading them to aim for the regular-season title. With Inter Miami's key players currently participating in the Copa America, can the Crew capitalize on this opportunity to overtake Miami?

Both New York City FC and their opponent CF Montreal have recently managed to ease their winless streaks with minor squad rotations. However, can they now break free from their crises completely?

Columbus Crew vs. Nashville SC - Chasing the Leaders
Defending playoff champions Columbus Crew have won six of their last seven matches, currently sitting 11 points behind Eastern Conference leaders Inter Miami, despite having played three fewer games. To put this in perspective, the Crew had only won three of their previous 11 matches. Considering their simultaneous journey to the CONCACAF Champions League final, their domestic resurgence is impressive.

The primary reason for the Crew's recent success is their enhanced offensive power. They have scored 21 goals in their last seven matches, compared to just 13 goals in their previous 11 games. This offensive boost can be attributed to the newfound chemistry among their attacking trio, who frequently assist each other, occasionally evoking memories of the legendary Dutch trio of the late 1980s.
This trio consists of one tall player and two speedy ones. The 1.88-meter-tall Ramirez, although not positioned as a center forward, often scores by arriving late in the box. True center forward Suarez, with his precise shooting, has proven to be a nightmare for MLS defenders, scoring 10 goals in 12 appearances this season.
Nashville SC, a mid-tier team in MLS, currently holds the last direct playoff spot in the Eastern Conference despite losing to Inter Miami in their last match. Like most MLS teams, Nashville could only defend against Miami. They held out for 40 minutes before conceding, then lost another goal just before halftime due to a lapse in concentration. Fortunately for them, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were absent; otherwise, Nashville's defense might have been overwhelmed.
Last season, the Crew only started their playoff surge late in the season. This year, however, they have both the ambition and the capability to contest for the regular-season title. Especially now, with Messi absent, the Crew are eager to close the gap with Miami. At home, the Crew are likely to showcase 30% of their strength, whereas Nashville might only display 10% of their power.
New York City FC vs. CF Montreal - Who Will Slip Back Into Crisis?
New York City FC ended their longest losing streak of the season with a 4-2 victory over Orlando City in their last match. Compared to their previous game against Nashville, NYCFC rotated four players. This rotation proved highly successful, as these players contributed a combined one goal and three assists. The standout performer was 22-year-old right-back Gray, whose breakthroughs and assists down the right flank caused significant problems for Orlando City's left-back Santos, who was eventually substituted due to a lack of confidence.
CF Montreal also ended their four-match winless streak with a 4-2 home victory over Philadelphia Union. They currently trail Toronto FC, who hold the last playoff spot, by two points with one game in hand. Toronto has lost four consecutive matches, making this an excellent opportunity for Montreal to catch up.
Like NYCFC, Montreal overcame their crisis by changing their starting lineup. Shadow strikers Jules and Martinez, who were given starting opportunities, worked well with the midfielders, effectively stretching the opponent's defense and creating numerous long-shot and header opportunities for the midfielders. Although Montreal's starting midfielders remained unchanged, their performances felt refreshing to the fans.
Both teams have recently struggled with losing streaks and, after temporarily alleviating their crises, quickly fell back into their slumps. So, which team will return to their losing ways in this match? NYCFC has won their last three home matches against Montreal and is likely to show 20% of their strength at home, while Montreal's attack may struggle to maintain a high level.
Analyzing the Crew's Offensive Surge
The Columbus Crew's recent offensive surge can be attributed to several key factors. Firstly, the synergy among their attacking trio has been remarkable. Ramirez, although not a traditional center forward, has thrived in a deeper role, frequently making late runs into the box to capitalize on scoring opportunities. His aerial prowess and positioning have made him a significant threat in set-piece situations as well.
Meanwhile, Suarez's precise finishing and agility have made him one of the most feared strikers in MLS this season. His ability to find space and create scoring chances has been crucial for the Crew. The third member of the trio, a quick and agile winger, has consistently provided width and pace, stretching defenses and creating space for his teammates.
Additionally, the Crew's midfield has played a pivotal role in their attacking success. The midfielders' ability to control possession, distribute the ball effectively, and support the attack has been instrumental. Their quick transitions from defense to attack have caught many opponents off guard, leading to numerous scoring opportunities.
Defensively, the Crew have also tightened up, reducing the number of goals conceded. This balance between solid defense and potent attack has made them a formidable team. Their recent form suggests that they are serious contenders for the regular-season title, especially with key players from Inter Miami currently unavailable.
NYCFC's Form and Montreal's Challenges
New York City FC's recent victory over Orlando City was a much-needed confidence booster after a series of disappointing results. The successful rotation of players, particularly the standout performance of right-back Gray, highlighted the depth and potential within the squad. Gray's ability to break down defenses and provide assists was a key factor in NYCFC's win. His dynamic play down the right flank not only created scoring opportunities but also relieved pressure on the defense.
However, maintaining this form will be challenging. Consistency has been an issue for NYCFC this season, and they will need to build on their recent success to climb up the standings. The rotation of players will be crucial in managing fatigue and injuries, especially as the season progresses.
On the other hand, CF Montreal faces a different set of challenges. Despite their recent win over Philadelphia Union, they remain outside the playoff spots. Their victory was largely due to the successful integration of new starters Jules and Martinez, who added a new dimension to their attack. However, maintaining this momentum will be difficult, especially against stronger opponents.
Montreal's midfield, while unchanged in personnel, showed significant improvement in their last match. The players' ability to link up play, control the tempo, and support both defense and attack was evident. This balance will be crucial if Montreal is to make a serious push for the playoffs. They will need to continue to perform at a high level and capitalize on any opportunities that come their way.
Looking Ahead
As the MLS season progresses, the Eastern Conference standings are likely to see significant changes. Columbus Crew's ambitions for both the CONCACAF Champions League and the MLS regular-season title will be tested. Their recent form suggests that they have the potential to achieve both, but consistency and avoiding injuries will be key.
For NYCFC and Montreal, the immediate focus will be on maintaining their recent form and climbing the standings. Both teams have shown glimpses of their potential, but consistency has been their Achilles' heel. Rotating players effectively, managing fatigue, and staying injury-free will be crucial for their success.
With key players from Inter Miami currently occupied with international duties, teams like Columbus Crew have a golden opportunity to close the gap at the top. The coming weeks will be critical in determining the direction of the season for many teams in the Eastern Conference. As always, the unpredictability of MLS means that fans can expect plenty of excitement and surprises along the way.
