Europa League Round 1: Manchester United Boss Seeks Respite, Hoffenheim Eyes Bundesliga Standings
As the Europa League kicked off in the early hours of September 26th (Beijing time), all eyes were on Manchester United and Hoffenheim, two clubs with very different motivations heading into the competition. For United, a poor start to the Premier League season has piled pressure on manager Erik ten Hag. Fortunately, the Europa League and the English League Cup offer him a chance to face lower-tier opposition, providing some much-needed breathing room. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim, struggling in the Bundesliga, faces the challenge of balancing their domestic campaign with European commitments, though it’s clear they may prioritize the league for now.

Manchester United vs. Twente: Ten Hag’s Opportunity to Rebound
Manchester United’s first-ever official meeting with Dutch side FC Twente has piqued the interest of fans, especially given manager Erik ten Hag’s Eredivisie background. United has a strong history at home against Dutch teams, having lost just one of their last nine such matches. With Ten Hag’s knowledge of Dutch football, fans are optimistic about this matchup, especially after a turbulent few weeks in the Premier League.

United suffered a demoralizing 3-0 defeat to Liverpool recently, a result that stoked fears about the team’s form. However, Ten Hag used the following fixtures against weaker opponents, Southampton and Barnsley, to bounce back with commanding victories. Despite these successes, United hit a stumbling block once more against Crystal Palace, who held them to a frustrating goalless draw.

At the post-match press conference, Ten Hag was characteristically animated, stating that United “almost devoured Crystal Palace” in the first half but lacked the clinical edge to finish off their opponent. Fans and pundits alike remarked humorously that they wished Ruud van Nistelrooy could have come off the bench for ten minutes to provide that cutting edge in front of goal. Palace, to their credit, had previously managed to shut out Chelsea, indicating that they are a tough nut to crack, especially when playing defensively. For United, a draw was a fair result, though frustrating given their dominance in large spells of the game.
Looking at Twente, the Dutch side finished third in last season’s Eredivisie, which earned them a spot in the Champions League qualifiers. Unfortunately for them, they were knocked out in the third round by Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg, relegating them to the Europa League. Nevertheless, they’ve started the new season in solid form, currently sitting fourth in the Eredivisie. Twente recently thrashed relegation-threatened Almere City 5-0, marking their first back-to-back wins of the campaign. Midfielder Sem Steijn was the star of the show, netting twice and momentarily topping the Eredivisie’s goalscoring charts. Ten Hag, who has long favored Dutch talent, might want to keep an eye on Steijn.
Despite their recent attacking form, Twente will likely approach the Old Trafford fixture cautiously. It’s hard to imagine them going all-out in their first Europa League group stage match, especially against a Premier League giant like Manchester United. United, for their part, should be able to secure a comfortable win even if they operate at just a fraction of their full capacity.
Midtjylland vs. Hoffenheim: Danish Dominance Meets German Struggles
Elsewhere in the Europa League, Danish champions Midtjylland take on Hoffenheim in a match that pits two clubs with vastly different priorities. Midtjylland, who came into the Europa League after losing in the Champions League qualifiers to Slovakian side Slovan Bratislava, are a relatively new force in Danish football. They only won their first domestic league title in the 2014-2015 season, but they’ve been a regular in European competition ever since. The club has participated in continental tournaments for ten consecutive seasons, with their best showing coming in the 2015-2016 Europa League, when they reached the knockout stages. However, last season, they were knocked out of the Europa Conference League in the qualification rounds by Poland’s Legia Warsaw.
Hoffenheim, meanwhile, finished seventh in the Bundesliga last season, which typically would have earned them a spot in the Europa Conference League. However, due to Bayer Leverkusen’s triumph in both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, Hoffenheim were promoted to the Europa League. This is their first European campaign since the 2020-2021 season when they topped their Europa League group only to be stunned by Norwegian side Molde in the first knockout round.
Hoffenheim’s start to the current Bundesliga campaign has been rocky. After an opening-day victory, they’ve suffered three consecutive losses and are now languishing near the bottom of the table, ahead of only three winless sides. In fairness, Hoffenheim’s defeats have come against teams currently in the top five of the Bundesliga, so as their schedule eases up, they should be able to climb the standings. Despite their poor results, Hoffenheim has at least managed to score in every match, which will help maintain the team’s confidence.
In contrast, Midtjylland is riding high domestically, sitting atop the Danish Superliga after a strong start to the season. Their form should give them a boost heading into this fixture, especially at home. However, the reality is that Midtjylland may only need to perform at half capacity to match Hoffenheim’s level, given the German club’s recent struggles.
Ten Hag’s Quest for Stability
Returning to Manchester United, Ten Hag is undoubtedly feeling the weight of expectations. Following a promising debut season in charge, where he led the team to a Champions League spot, the Dutch manager has found life in his second season much more challenging. Injuries, inconsistency, and the pressures of English football have made for a difficult start, and Ten Hag will be eager to use the Europa League as a platform to regain some momentum.
One of the key storylines in Ten Hag’s early tenure has been United’s inability to consistently finish their chances, especially against defensively organized sides like Crystal Palace. In recent weeks, there has been growing chatter about the need for a prolific goalscorer, with fans lamenting the absence of a player like Ruud van Nistelrooy or Robin van Persie, who could be counted on to deliver in big moments.
Despite the absence of such a player, United’s fixture against Twente offers Ten Hag an opportunity to experiment with his attacking lineup, possibly handing starts to fringe players or new signings looking to make an impact. It will also be a chance for Ten Hag to demonstrate his tactical acumen against a side he knows well, having managed in the Eredivisie with Utrecht and Ajax before moving to Manchester.
Should United secure a comfortable victory, it would go a long way in relieving some of the pressure on Ten Hag. With tougher Premier League fixtures on the horizon, a dominant showing in the Europa League could help restore confidence within the squad and fanbase alike.
Hoffenheim’s Balancing Act
For Hoffenheim, the Europa League presents a different sort of challenge. While the financial and reputational rewards of European success are significant, the reality is that the club’s domestic form is likely to take precedence. Hoffenheim’s performances in the Bundesliga have left them dangerously close to the relegation zone, and manager Pellegrino Matarazzo will need to carefully manage his squad’s workload as they juggle both competitions.
Matarazzo’s main focus will be on ensuring Hoffenheim’s Bundesliga survival, but the Europa League could offer the chance to rotate the squad and give valuable minutes to players on the fringes of the first team. If Hoffenheim can navigate the group stages without overstretching their resources, they may yet find themselves in a strong position to advance, though their primary concern will be improving their domestic form.
Midtjylland, for their part, are in the opposite position. With their domestic league form flying high, they may feel emboldened to take the Europa League more seriously and target progression to the knockout stages. However, given Hoffenheim’s struggles, the Danish side will likely be cautious in their approach, aiming to secure at least a point while not overcommitting resources to what is, for them, a long and demanding European campaign.
In conclusion, the first round of the Europa League offers a mixed bag for both Manchester United and Hoffenheim. For United, it’s a chance to alleviate pressure and gain some much-needed confidence, while for Hoffenheim, the focus remains firmly on turning their Bundesliga fortunes around. Both managers will be looking to strike the right balance between European ambition and domestic priorities, as they navigate a challenging start to the season.
