Comprehensive Scan of Inter Milan’s Two Controversial Figures: Key Promises from the Top Brass and Timely Heartwarming Scenes
Inter Milan, coming off a grueling 120-minute Champions League clash, faced Napoli, Serie A’s recent “draw specialists,” with a referee known for controversial decisions. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Failing to secure a victory at home, or rather not clinching a win to vent their frustration, left a sense of regret. This sentiment was echoed by Simone Inzaghi and Federico Dimarco, who apologized post-match. Yet, given the dire physical state and the immense challenges Inter faced, avoiding a second consecutive defeat and maintaining a 14-point lead with nine Serie A rounds remaining was a positive outcome.

The match itself lacked excitement. Inter had played extra time in the Champions League and had one less day of rest compared to their rivals, leading to visible physical and psychological fatigue. What stood out was Inzaghi’s post-match comment: “Enduring a lot of external criticism? We’re used to it. We’ve built a thick skin, and now we can even enjoy it.” From his early days at Inter, when external criticism would occasionally unsettle him, to now being able to smile at it, Inzaghi has undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks in part to Inter’s challenging media environment.

Let’s delve into the current state of two of Inter’s controversial figures: Francesco Acerbi and Lautaro Martinez, both facing moral scrutiny.

Acerbi’s Controversy: The Racism Allegation
Acerbi’s controversy stems from accusations of racism. During a match, Juan Jesus reported Acerbi to the fourth official, accusing him of making a racist remark, "Sei un negro." On Italian social media, many so-called “neutral” fans, often wearing Atletico Madrid jerseys in support of Inter’s rivals, have been morally condemning Acerbi, escalating the issue to the extent that some fans worry about a long-term suspension.
In reality, this is much ado about nothing. Dimarco confirmed that both parties were hurling insults at each other, and Acerbi’s retort, which included the racially charged phrase, was a slip of the tongue. Acerbi immediately apologized, and the matter was settled then and there. After the match, Acerbi embraced Juan Jesus, indicating closure. In European leagues, players often exchange heated words in the heat of the moment. Holding onto a few words and blowing them out of proportion smacks of overreaction.
As for the moralists who seized this opportunity to sensationalize the incident, it’s inconsequential. They are perpetually dissatisfied, and according to their dire predictions, Inter should have gone bankrupt or disbanded long ago.
Lautaro Martinez: The Contract Controversy
The other controversial figure is Lautaro Martinez, dubbed “Moneytaro” due to contract renewal disputes. Following Inter’s Champions League exit, Lautaro faced a barrage of criticism on social media, both domestic and international. The ire wasn’t solely because he missed a penalty that wouldn’t have guaranteed a comeback but also because some believe he doesn’t deserve a net annual salary of over €9 million. Critics argue that not selling Lautaro for a hefty sum reflects poorly on CEO Beppe Marotta’s decision-making.
However, on that fateful night, Marotta promised that Inter would finalize Lautaro’s contract renewal before the end of the season. This decision makes sense for several reasons. Whether or not a massive offer for Lautaro comes in during the summer and whether Inter should evaluate it is a discussion for another time. But for now, in the delicate period following their Champions League exit, renewing Lautaro’s contract is more beneficial than not.
Renewing the captain and top scorer’s contract is crucial for stability, especially after this season’s extensive squad overhaul. Furthermore, in football, strikers often earn higher salaries than players in other positions, so it’s unfair to compare Lautaro’s wages to those of players in other roles and pass moral judgment.
Moreover, Inter should avoid the risk of having their most valuable player with a dwindling contract period. Marotta’s promise shows he has a clear understanding of the situation. After the Champions League exit, Inter fans were disappointed, providing an opportunity for anxiety peddlers to steer the narrative once again.
Heartwarming Scene Amidst Turmoil
Despite the disappointment, a touching scene unfolded as Inter’s team bus arrived at San Siro. A large group of Inter fans, with flares and chants, welcomed the team like returning heroes, offering sincere encouragement and applause. This moment reminded everyone that Inter’s Champions League performance wasn’t poor. Had it not been for the abolition of the away goals rule, Inter would have reached the quarterfinals.
It also highlighted that Inter’s season hasn’t been a failure. Winning the Serie A title would already make this season a success. This scene also demonstrated that not all Inter fans are fragile. They don’t fall apart after losing one match following ten wins. Instead, many choose to focus on the positives and look forward.
For Inter, experiencing the pain of a Champions League exit, this heartwarming support came at the perfect time, especially as some fair-weather fans might leave. It was a timely reminder that many fans still believe in the team’s future and choose to remain optimistic.
