Bundesliga Round 8 Preview: Dortmund on the Rise, Leverkusen Struggling to Shake Off Complacency
The eighth round of the Bundesliga continues early on October 21. Borussia Dortmund, who had a rocky start to the season with frequent slip-ups against weaker teams, seem to have found their footing and remain unbeaten—a very positive sign. On the other hand, Bayer Leverkusen squandered numerous chances and allowed Cologne to create several scoring opportunities in their last match, showing a lack of the champion mentality required to contend for the title.

Dortmund vs. Werder Bremen - Füllkrug Faces His Old Team
Despite multiple unexpected point drops this season, Borussia Dortmund finds some solace in Bayern Munich's equally unsteady form. After seven matches, both teams share the same number of points, with the two German football powerhouses occupying only the third and fourth positions on the table. Nevertheless, the season is still in its early stages, and the current top two teams are unlikely to maintain their positions. In another ten rounds, it's probable that Dortmund and Bayern will be back at the summit of the standings.

Before the international break, Dortmund's offensive prowess finally shone through, netting four goals in a single match for the second time this season. Veteran Marco Reus was once again instrumental, contributing directly to a goal and achieving 3 goals and 1 assist in the last four matches. This form keeps his hopes of a national team return alive. Additionally, substitute striker Sébastien Haller found the net, although his goal was disallowed, it still gave Dortmund fans something to cheer about, especially since relying on defenders for goals isn't sustainable.

Second-year team Werder Bremen had a relatively easy time securing their Bundesliga status last season. This year, their luck hasn't been as favorable, as they sit just two points above the relegation playoff spot, a position that accurately reflects their current capabilities. Despite selling their star player Niclas Füllkrug to Dortmund in the final stages of the transfer window, Werder Bremen's attacking power hasn't waned significantly. They have scored at least two goals in their last five league matches, embodying the principle that the best defense is a good offense.
Last season, Bremen shocked Dortmund with a 3-2 away victory, but this season's Dortmund looks more composed and poised to secure a 3-1 home win against Bremen. Füllkrug facing his former team adds an extra layer of intrigue to the match.
Wolfsburg vs. Leverkusen - Leaders Must Shake Off Complacency
Wolfsburg's season started strong with two consecutive wins, but their performance since has been inconsistent, alternating between wins and losses. In their recent away match against Stuttgart, a team they have dominated in direct encounters, Wolfsburg felt the rise in their opponent's level. Despite scoring first, Wolfsburg was defeated by Stuttgart's main striker, Serhou Guirassy, who netted a hat-trick, leaving Wolfsburg empty-handed. After only seven rounds, Guirassy's goal tally is just three short of last season's top scorer, Christopher Nkunku, leaving even Harry Kane in awe of the Guinean forward.
Leverkusen's recent matches have been marked by growing confidence. Despite a relaxed approach, they managed a comfortable 3-0 victory over Cologne. However, this apparent ease revealed underlying issues. They struggled to fully control the match and made numerous errors, allowing Cologne several one-on-one opportunities with the Leverkusen goalkeeper, which Cologne failed to capitalize on due to poor finishing. Similarly, Leverkusen missed several easy chances despite their three goals, reflecting a dangerous complacency that can harm their title ambitions.
Wolfsburg won't be intimidated by Leverkusen. Both teams need to reset their mental states after the international break, and Wolfsburg could leverage their home advantage to secure a 2-1 win.
Analysis and Expectations
Borussia Dortmund's recent form and stable defense make them favorites against Werder Bremen. The team has gradually improved, finding a balance between offensive prowess and defensive solidity. Marco Reus's resurgence and the gradual integration of players like Sébastien Haller add to their attacking options. Dortmund's ability to maintain composure and capitalize on key moments will be crucial in their quest for the top positions.
On the other hand, Werder Bremen's resilience and attacking spirit cannot be underestimated. Despite their defensive frailties, their ability to score consistently makes them a dangerous opponent. The absence of Niclas Füllkrug might have shifted their attacking dynamics, but the team has adapted well, showing that their offensive threat remains potent.
For Wolfsburg, the challenge lies in finding consistency. Their performance oscillates between impressive victories and disappointing losses. The recent defeat to Stuttgart highlighted their vulnerabilities, particularly in defense. Addressing these issues and maintaining focus will be essential for Wolfsburg to secure a positive result against Leverkusen.
Leverkusen, while displaying moments of brilliance, must overcome their complacency. Their relaxed approach against Cologne might have worked in their favor this time, but such an attitude could prove costly against stronger opponents. Maintaining intensity and minimizing errors will be key for Leverkusen to assert their dominance and stay in contention for the title.
As the Bundesliga progresses, the competition will only intensify. Dortmund's gradual rise, Wolfsburg's quest for consistency, and Leverkusen's battle against complacency will be central narratives in the unfolding drama of the season. Each team faces unique challenges, but their responses will shape their fortunes and the league's landscape in the coming weeks.
