5 Goals in 2 Games for Just €6 Million! Barcelona’s 18-Year-Old Castoff Shines, Chelsea Legend Says “He Can Be a Superstar”
Chelsea’s Europa Conference League campaign reached new heights as the Blues crushed Shamrock Rovers 5-1 at Stamford Bridge, securing their sixth consecutive win in the group stage. The star of the night was undoubtedly 18-year-old striker Guiu, who lit up the match with a sensational first-half hat trick. This performance marked his second consecutive standout appearance in the competition, following a two-goal outing in his previous match.

Guiu’s Hat Trick Steals the Show
The young forward wasted no time making his mark on the game. In the 22nd minute, Guiu broke the deadlock with a perfectly timed header, showcasing his sharp positional sense. Although the visitors managed to equalize, Guiu quickly restored Chelsea’s lead in the 34th minute by capitalizing on a defensive error, intercepting a poor back pass and calmly slotting the ball into an empty net.

Just before halftime, Guiu completed his hat trick with another header, this time connecting with a pinpoint cross from Noni Madueke. By the 60th minute, with the game firmly in Chelsea’s control, Guiu was substituted for João Félix, leaving the pitch to a standing ovation.

In just two Europa Conference League appearances, Guiu has scored five goals, bringing his total in the competition to six this season. His prolific form has drawn widespread praise and raised questions about his limited opportunities in the Premier League.
A €6 Million Gamble Paying Off
Guiu’s journey to Stamford Bridge began in the summer transfer window when Chelsea activated his €6 million release clause to sign him from Barcelona. At the time, the move was seen as a low-risk gamble on a young talent who had struggled for opportunities at Camp Nou.
At Barcelona, Guiu’s skill set as a striker was somewhat overlooked. While his dribbling ability may not be elite, his instinct in front of goal and work ethic set him apart. Chelsea’s decision to invest in the young forward is now looking like a masterstroke, with Guiu quickly establishing himself as one of the brightest prospects in their squad.
Praise from Joe Cole
Among the many voices lauding Guiu’s recent performances is Chelsea legend Joe Cole, who offered high praise for the young striker during TNT Sports coverage of the match.
“I can’t understand how Barcelona let Guiu go,” Cole remarked. “In two years, this kid could be a fully developed, top-tier No. 9. In my opinion, Barcelona made a mistake letting him leave.”
Cole went on to draw comparisons between Guiu and legendary striker Luis Suárez, emphasizing the similarities in their playing styles.
“He has an incredible nose for goal, and there’s something about him that reminds me of Suárez,” Cole said. “I’m not saying Guiu is Suárez right now, but his instincts in the box and his relentless spirit are very similar. Players like Guiu, who never stop running and give everything on the pitch, are rare. He has the potential to become a superstar for Chelsea.”
Limited Opportunities in the Premier League
Despite his remarkable form in the Europa Conference League, Guiu has struggled to find playing time in the Premier League. With established forwards like Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson ahead of him in the pecking order, the 18-year-old has only managed 23 minutes of league action this season.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, however, has assured that opportunities will come for those who work hard. “Everyone who puts in the effort will get their chance,” Maresca said in a recent press conference, hinting that Guiu’s performances could earn him more significant roles in the future.
The Road Ahead
Guiu’s breakout performances in Europe have not only boosted Chelsea’s campaign but also highlighted the club’s ability to spot and nurture young talent. As the Europa Conference League progresses and the Premier League season unfolds, the question remains: how soon will Chelsea fully unleash their €6 million gem on the domestic stage?
For now, Guiu’s story is one of redemption and rapid rise, a testament to his talent and determination. If his current trajectory continues, the young striker may soon prove to Barcelona that letting him go was a monumental mistake.
